At least 21 people have died after a boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of north-western Senegal, the country’s interior ministry said on Sunday. One person was rescued and 21 bodies had been recovered by Saturday evening, the ministry said in a statement, describing the death toll as provisional while search and rescue operations continued.

The vessel, a pirogue — a traditional flat-bottomed wooden boat — came into difficulty off Kébémer, a coastal town about 180 kilometres north of the capital, Dakar, near the Loumpoul dunes between Dakar and the northern city of Saint-Louis, according to Senegalese media reports. The ministry did not say how many people had been on board, nor what caused the boat to capsize, leaving open the possibility that the death toll could rise further as the search goes on.

Senegalese newspaper Le Soleil reported that most of the victims came from the communes of Léona and Thiéppe in the Kébémer department. The ministry said assistance was being provided to the victims’ families, but it gave no details on where the boat had been heading.

The ministry said the boat was carrying people seeking to migrate irregularly. The Atlantic route from West Africa to Spain’s Canary Islands is among the deadliest migration journeys in the world, and thousands of people have died attempting it in recent years, including 635 in the first five months of this year, according to migrant rights group Walking Borders.

The sinking comes during a sharp rise in departures. Earlier this week, Spain’s maritime rescue services picked up 3,261 people in the first six days of November alone, and regional authorities in the Canary Islands warned the numbers were unsustainable. Senegalese authorities also reported intercepting 142 migrants aboard another boat on Friday as they attempted the same crossing.

Crossings typically pick up in the autumn, when sea conditions along the route are generally calmer. But the boats are often overcrowded, and the long distances, rough seas and strong currents make the journey perilous even in favourable weather.
