Abu Dhabi National Oil Company has become the first energy company to deploy OpenAI’s Frontier platform, signing a multi-year partnership with OpenAI and G42 at the ADIPEC energy exhibition on Monday. The agreement, signed through G42 subsidiary Inception42, will put OpenAI’s frontier models and AI agents to work across ADNOC’s operations, connecting decisions from the wellhead to the market.
The partnership will initially focus on two applications. The first transforms field master planning, bringing together subsurface, facilities and economic studies that are currently carried out separately into a single integrated decision, drawing on decades of data covering thousands of wells, multiple stacked reservoirs and hundreds of surface facilities. The second values each barrel of oil while it is still underground, linking production, refining, trading and sales so that operational, capital and commercial choices are considered together rather than one after another.
The system will run on OpenAI’s GPT models using inference infrastructure inside the United Arab Emirates provided by G42, so computing and data processing stay in the country rather than in overseas data centres. ADNOC says human experts will retain oversight of consequential decisions, that proprietary data and critical infrastructure will remain protected, and that the partnership will also strengthen cyber defence through Daybreak Blue, an OpenAI initiative that helps security teams find vulnerabilities and protect critical energy infrastructure. The partners will also train ADNOC’s workforce to deploy and use the new tools.
The deal builds on AI work already under way at ADNOC. Its ENERGYai platform provides detailed intelligence on reservoirs, assets and operations, and the company has already rolled out ChatGPT Enterprise to more than 40,000 employees. G42 and OpenAI have worked together since 2023, and in May 2025 they joined Oracle, Nvidia, SoftBank and Cisco to announce Stargate UAE, a one-gigawatt computing cluster in Abu Dhabi and the first international deployment under OpenAI’s Stargate initiative.
The ADNOC agreement was one of four signed between Abu Dhabi organisations and OpenAI on Monday, witnessed by Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan after his meeting with Altman. The others cover a Machine-Readable Government initiative for Abu Dhabi, AI for investment analysis at sovereign investor Mubadala, and a five-year rollout of Frontier technology across UAE government entities, large companies and education. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman described the ADNOC partnership as first of its kind, saying it would help ADNOC move faster, operate more efficiently and make better decisions across the energy value chain, while ADNOC chief executive Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber said it showed how frontier AI could move beyond individual applications to reshape the performance of an entire industry.
Two points of caution should be kept in view. No financial value was disclosed for any of the four agreements, and no timetable for full implementation was given in the announcements reported. The signing also took place against a tense regional backdrop: ExxonMobil and Chevron cancelled plans for executives to attend ADIPEC last week, citing security concerns, as fears of fresh United States attacks on Iran and retaliation by Tehran have gripped oil markets.
